  • MTS was the big winner," telecommunications consultant Iain Grant said after Industry Canada announced that new players will get some of the national wireless action, while the old guard -- Bell, Rogers and Telus -- will have to share tower space and allow roaming rights on their networks. Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. -- MTS has long seen itself as a potential front-runner to become the fourth national wireless carrier. It already controls a significant share of the cell-phone market in Manitoba and it has a captive client base of national business customers in place for its sophisticated enterprise telecommunications services. Many analysts say they believe that Industry Canada's decision to set aside a portion of the new spectrum to be auctioned of for new entrants favours MTS the ...

As a recent SaskTel annual report notes, "Saskatchewan is now available to competitors ... that outstrip anything (SaskTel) can achieve within the province. Our traditional revenue sources have long ago fallen away ... for SaskTel to continue as a profitable enterprise ... throughout a serving area as sparsely populated as Saskatchewan ... it must expand beyond its borders. While MTS acquired the nationally based company Allstream, out-invested SaskTel by almost two to one for the past five years, and runs a fibre optic network from New York to Victoria, SaskTel's out-of-province operations, such as its phone directory business, are valued in the tens of millions. The Allstream acquisition cost $1.6 billion, a figure com...

  • I have been recently released from the military with a telecommunications background and my fiancée has graduated with a business management diploma. We've considered moving to Winnipeg to begin the new phase of our lives and start a family, thinking Winnipeg's cost of living plus the bright future the city has would be great for us. Unfortunately, that is obviously a myth. Housing prices are fast rising and once again the provincial government has no intention of supporting the idea that Winnipeg can be home, once again, to a top-level sports team. Why would a potential owner want to invest in a province without vision to grow? Why would people like myself move to the city when the premier is content with staying mundane. Congratulations to Dave Angus and the Winnipeg Chamber of Commer...

  • [Leonard Asper] told a Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission panel that not having Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. (TSX: ACC.B) would "accelerate" the ratings decline at CanWest Global Communications Corp.'s (TSX: CGS) conventional television networks. CanWest wouldn't get back anything close to what it paid for Alliance Atlantis if the CRTC rejects the deal, Asper added. At issue during the CRTC hearings is CanWest's minority stake of Alliance Atlantis under the terms of its take over deal with New York-based investment firm Goldman Sachs.

Edward Whitacre Jr., 67, eventually will replace Kent Kresa, who will remain GM's interim chairman until the reorganized automaker emerges as a new company. WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for Chrysler's sale to Fiat, turning down a last-ditch bid by opponents of the deal. Chrysler, Fiat and the Obama administration had warned the high court's intervention could scuttle the sale.
