Enter Barack Obama. Washington and a labour union (and to a much lesser extent Canada) now own Chrysler; GM is heading for a similar fate; taxpayers control America's largest insurance company; the nation's banks and mortgage companies are dancing to the administration's tune; health care and education are priorities as is much heavier market regulations. [Michael Ignatieff] has given some hints about what he'd like to see in the party's policy paper. He's preoccupied by questions of identity, patriotism and national unity -- all old Liberal chestnuts. But these ideas are not relevant any more. Endless surveys, all faithfully reported in glossy magazines in your doctor's office, say Canadians know who they are; they are proud of their identity and they know why they are different from A...

Canada's automotive trade balance has gone "from bad to worse" as Detroit's carmakers surrender market share in a weakening U.S. sales environment, the Canadian Auto Workers union warns. GM plans to close its Oshawa truck plant, which builds GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups, next year. But the company has decided to maintain production of hybrid versions of the trucks in Oshawa for the time being and not move them to Mexico as planned. A GM official said the factory will still close next year or sooner depending on market conditions.

Canadian policy makers have repeatedly emphasized improving relations with Brazil as a strategic objective in the Americas. Given past failures to cooperate, this objective may be difficult to realize. We argue that one of the reasons for this unrealized relationship between Canada and Brazil within hemispheric institutions is different national approaches to the role and purpose of multilateralism. This argument is advanced through an analysis of national interpretations of each country's engagement with multilateralism, drawing on the local literatures. The paper concludes with a discussion of the prospects and limits of future multilateral cooperation between the two countries, drawing on examples from the Inter-American System.

So, on balance I'd say it's very safe. Just stay on the well-worn tourist track. That's what we did and I had a fantastic time with our van of four journalists from Montreal, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and me, a native of Winnipeg from Vancouver. At night, the journalists boarded a traditional dhow boat for a 45-minute cruise to Mombasa's Old Town. We walked the ancient streets that lead to Fort Jesus, a fabled Portuguese bastion with metre-thick coral walls built in 1593. Much of the fort's history was detailed in a sound and light show with actors in period costumes. The fort's key role in the slave trade was not mentioned. Everywhere in Kenya, people were very happy to see us, greeting us with "Jambo" (hello, in Swahili) and "Karibu" (welcome). They'll be happy to see you, too.
