University of Manitoba's faculty of medicine confirmed 52 of this year's 91 medical graduates plan to finish their postgraduate training in Manitoba -- up from 38 graduates in 2008. Last year, the majority of the province's medical graduates left Manitoba, including 13 students who wanted to stay and train but didn't get residency positions. The situation sparked ire from critics who said the university was handing training spots over to international medical graduates who are more likely to leave Manitoba. It just doesn't make sense why don't we train enough of our own people to make up our needs instead of grabbing doctors from elsewhere in the world," he said. "We need half of our graduates to become family doctors and the majority of them aren't. A lot of them are pursuing specialt...
It is surely not to audacious to infer that Germans leave the parental home while still in education more than Italians because they have additional means to do so. Not only their parents, as in Italy, might support them, in addition students' subsidizes and training wages represent an additional (if not even the main) source of income. This relative economic independence from parents might facilitate the achievement of residential independence, or at least it increases their "bargain power" vis-a-vis their parents. Moreover, also the employment conditions of young people in Italy and West-Germany are quite different. The youth unemployment rate is always higher in Italy than in West-Germany. Yet, while in the mid '80s the Italian rate was Only' twice as much as the West-German's, in th...
The Wheat Kings trimmed their roster to 34 at the conclusion of training camp on Sunday and nine more players will leave later this week as they head off to take part in National Hockey League training camps. [...] NHL free agents Brodie Melnychuk (San Jose Sharks), Jordan Hale (Ottawa Senators) and Jay Fehr (Minnesota Wild) have been given tryouts, although it's unknown if Fehr's leg injury will allow him to skate with the Wild at the annual rookie tournament in Traverse City, Mich.

Heaven knows the rationale for Canada's involvement has already shifted several times and may well shift again. Originally, we went there to rout the Taliban and destroy al-Qaida training camps. Then it was to plug the dike to keep the resilient Taliban from regaining a foothold. Later, it was to help Afghans move toward democracy and development. Some also say we went in Kabul and Kandahar as a sop to George W. Bush because we rejected his call to join him in Iraq. Now, others say we're there to bolster NATO's credibility. The latest wrinkle, from John Manley, is that if other NATO countries don't put their soldiers where their rhetoric is, we'll leave by next February. Whichever explanation you accept, it seems whether we stay or leave depends on criteria someone else decides on. Mayb...

[Bryan Berard] has been around a number of years now (and) he has been a good defenceman for quite some time," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "I'm excited about Bryan's willingness to come here on a tryout. It will certainly pick up the competition level of what is going to take place in training camp. "When I was in Toronto, there were a lot of mixed emotions and me being told this and that, but right now that chapter of my life is in the past," he said. "I'm glad I'm in an organization that's honest and up front and lets you know what's going on from the top." "I have a clean slate here," he said. "Last year, I couldn't get my body up to speed. This year, I'm coming in early and making sure that I don't leave anything to chance."
Four years later, the air force still hasn't come up with a way to recognize the Predator's contributions in Afghanistan and Iraq. "There is no valor in flying a remotely piloted aircraft. I get it," said Col. Luther "Trey" Turner, a former fighter pilot who has flown Predators since 2003. "But there needs to be an award to recognize crews for combat missions. Most mission statements are long, complicated and italicized," he said. "Mine was three words: "Kill (Expletive) Heads." His troops shortened it further to "KFH" and painted it on the cluster of trailers that served as their makeshift headquarters. They emblazoned KFH on their unit letterhead. Everyone in the unit carried a poker chip bearing the three letters. The plan that [Eric Mathewson] produced for the air force envisions ...

We've only had a little bit of communication with those who made the decision and they've cited the differences in our bid and the one from Gatineau as being technical and facilities specific," said Bruce Kent, chair of Winnipeg's bid to host committee. "Even when we looked at our own bid, we knew that was fair. The facilities at U of M are great but with both teams here, there's been a bit of space crunch. Everyone has been great to the national teams, there just isn't more space to give. "From a player's standpoint, the team's been in Winnipeg for 12 years now and we've had limited success so it seems it's time to change things and see if new scenery provides new results," said Mike Munday, a Winnipeg native and Canada's starting setter. It was a good news-bad news scenario on Thurs...

[Mick Jarrett] sounds like a responsible cyclist. I wish all cyclists I see on the roads (and sidewalks) were more like him. He states he cannot "drink coffee, text or talk on (his) phone" etc. He may be surprised to know that I have seen cyclists talking on their cell phones, and certainly listening to music on their iPods. As a pedestrian, I have had numerous close calls, with cyclists coming up silently behind me and startling me while I'm walking on the sidewalk. I like to enjoy my walks, but I'm sure that one of these days there's going to be a serious collision between me and a cyclist who wants to share the sidewalk with me. While there are some who are courteous enough to let me know when they are passing, they are certainly the exception and not the rule. Upon reading Changing ...
