Friendship is a frequently-used word but it is difficult to define it clearly. Friendship in its various configurations links people and communities together in some sort of reciprocally beneficial association that forms societies. Thus friendship is a concept that deserves attention. This paper examines some of the similarities and differences about understandings of friendship which both support and challenge traditional western perspectives. The article argues that an exploration of the experiences and interpretations of friendship outside the western philosophical tradition demonstrates a shared understanding about many aspects, but also some subtle differences which, while challenging some of the western concepts, can also be incorporated into developments of the idea of friendship.

Once again David O'Brien brings forward his agenda for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (Museum of ideas, not atrocity and insult, May 24). I disagree, however, with his seemingly automatic assumption that the inclusion of the Holocaust as part of our museum is a given. If anything, information about and memorials to the Holocaust abound. Add to this Hollywood's annual Holocaust movie, and the remembrance of the Jewish part of the Holocaust is over represented. If the Holocaust is to be part of our human rights museum, then let's cover the whole thing. After all, while six million Jews died tragically in t...

This study investigates factors associated with the use of Japanese on the Web sites of 362 non-Japanese companies listed on the Fortune Global 500. The results showed that business to consumer (B2C) firms were more likely to offer Japanese than those in business to business (B2B). Companies in the financial services sector did not tend to have Japanese on their sites. B2C service firms (e.g., retailers) were less likely to adapt to Japan's market than the others. Only 35% of the companies with subsidiaries or offices in Japan offered Japanese. This group, not surprisingly, was more likely to provide information in its host country's language. The study's findings indicate that international market factors and the economics of language act in tandem to affect the Internet multilingualis...
