Yet, given each family's religious background, the experience of loss is strongly mediated by Islam. There are several terms that Muslims use when dealing with loss. Some believe that a person has an "Amanat" (deposit) in this world. When God wants to take His deposit, there is no reason to be angered, for Muslims have to accept God's order (Al-Krenawi, 1996). Related, "Al-Gadhar", or fate, is also a common theme. Two such closely linked expressions are "Hakmat Allah, " (God's judgement), and "Maktoub " (it is written). The belief in fate is a core part of Islam: all things that happen to a person, both good and evil, are thought to be the will of God (Wikan, 1988). People are encouraged to accept their fate with strong faith, courage, and great patience (Al-Krenawi, 1996; Al-Krenawi an...

IN this fathom-long body, subject though it is to death and decay, I will show you the beginning and end of the universe." With these words the Buddha introduced "The Four Foundations of Mindfulness," a contemplative method for the investigation of reality that has flourished for some 3,000 years. Seekers rely on the Buddha's techniques to probe the spiritual world in the same way that physicists use electron microscopes to investigate the physical world.
Mindfulness is "non-judgmental awareness of the present moment." Trauma is "a serious injury or wound to the body and/or mind." To most people, the conjoining of these two conditions would be extremely unpleasant, something to avoid or repress.
Typically, reflection on the past is fraught with regret, especially if this reflection is...

The appropriately tided first section of the book, Assessment, spans only two chapters. The first of these, by [VICTORIA. M. FOLLETTE] and Naugle, provides a broad, over-arching social and environmental context for understanding responses to trauma. This includes the survivor's perception of the traumatic event during and after - and the immediate social consequences. There is a particular focus on the social fallout associated with trauma-related avoidance and numbing. Although interesting and very applicable, the theoretical bases for Chapter Two are quite dense for an introduction to assessment. Some readers may prefer to begin with Chapter Three instead, and then return to Chapter Two. Chapter Three is very well written, easy to understand, and offers a wealth of quick reference inf...

Jan and [Donald Miller] "Dusty" Miller were questioned for several minutes by U.S. border agents after the 54-year-old man's name and birthdate came up listed as "armed and dangerous" on a border crossing computer.
Thing is, the Americans don't know how to say 'I'm sorry for the inconvenience.'
"I'll go back by myself because I don't want to take the wife through that again," he explained. "I don't want to take the chance."

Ben-Gurion would be (spinning) in his grave, had he known that his successor after 60 years will be a prime minister suspected of being involved in bribery and corruption," said Elkana Gali, Ben-Gurion's first political secretary. Gali, a retired journalist, attended the historic first session of Israel's nascent parliament where Israel's founding father read his historic Declaration of Independence.
What is more important is what will happen to the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that Egypt has negotiated with Hamas. Even before the "explosion" of the new bribery scandal, Israeli security officials expressed reservations about some elements in the Egyptian proposal, while [Ehud Olmert] and [Tzipi Livni] were ready to accept the deal. In view of the new development, could Olmert accept wha...

Indra Pulcins, CIHI's director of health reports, said the hospital data shows that while some mistakes are fairly common, including medication errors and trauma during birth, other adverse outcomes during procedures like blood transfusions are rarely reported.
Dr. Rob Robson, chief patient safety officer for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, said these statistics are likely accurate for Manitoba, although it's possible that some adverse events aren't reported.
Robson said Manitoba's data shows that one in 15,000 surgeries are performed on the wrong patient or the wrong side of the patient, despite medical staff's best intentions.

Federal and provincial governments must be flexible in supporting community-based solutions," said [Jeff Reading]. "It will take a concerted effort by governments, law enforcement and healthcare agencies, educators, industry, and the young Aboriginal adults themselves to find solutions. Most importantly, if there is a perpetrator in the community and people know, they need to speak out, if they don't, they are part of the problem.
"Given proper support and accessibility to services, Aboriginal young people are amazingly resilient," said [Patricia Spittal]. "Many of those who have experienced sexual abuse have been able to deal with these issues, and are leading healthy and productive lives. Look at actor Adam Beach for example who just recently disclosed his childhood sexual abuse exp...
