Another advised, "On a recent trip to Cayo Santa Maris in Cuba, we also ran into the problem of our hotel not changing any Canadian cash that had any imperfections on it, such as a pen mark or tiny tear. We also found that certain credit cards are not accepted, in particular, American Express. Fortunately, we had Visa. I feel that all tour operators should be more aware of the situation, and ensure that their clients are not inconvenienced.
Yet another: "They would not accept two of my $20 bills. One was slightly torn and the other had writing on it. It is good advice to tell anyone travelling to Cuba to make sure that their bank notes are relatively new, not torn, and don't have any writing on them. As payment options in Cuba are limited, and there are virtually no ATM machines, trave...

A summertime rail service from Toronto to Niagara Falls, Ont., includes what Via Rail bills as "Canada's first casino car.
Via's last train in the other direction leaves Niagara Falls at 9:20 p.m., getting into Toronto at 11:09 p.m. -- which would allow travellers arriving on train 95 less than two hours in the Falls. They can opt to spend the night in a Falls hotel or B&B and return the following day.

QUESTION: When returning from a two-week vacation in Jamaica, we had to pay $260 for our overweight luggage. We are not disputing the amount we had to pay ($20 per kilo) but the fact that we had to pay it in U.S. funds. We were told that if we paid in cash, we could pay in Canadian funds, but if we used our credit card we would have to pay in U.S. dollars. Why would there be a difference, since this is a Canadian company?
First we heard GoDirect would be the carrier. It got kiboshed by process problems which, in the end, seemed to be financial. Then we heard it might be Air Transat, which has been doing a good job getting people to Europe from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver over the past few years. But this carrier's finances also went wacky recently with the tougher economy. Transat n...
