On the UN-designated annual International Day of Peace, marked on Sept. 21, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon linked ongoing war to continuing violations of human rights and chronic underdevelopment. The current bestseller, "Three Cups of Tea," by Greg Mortensen, about an American mountain climber who turns to helping poor, remote Muslim communities in Pakistan and Afghanistan build schools is a testament to the value of sustainable development over "tribal" warfare.

Development" -- a term that entered popular discourse in the late 1980s has certainly been become one of the most debatable buzzwords of the new millennium. The nature and philosophy of development has been the subject matter of profound debates and concerns in economic, political, cultural studies and academic circles since the mid 1980s. This paper argues that through the development process, like colonization, modernization, globalization, the west is exploiting and exerting dominance over the other country's economies, cultures and traditional way of life. The west makes space of development by identifying, defining certain problems and prescribes remedy for the "Third World" countries. The Entitlement offered a universal application of reason to human affairs and it embedded in a ...

The paper takes a critical look at the current rebranding project in Nigeria in the light of the mounting predominance of poverty and food insecurity in the country. It argues that attempt to upgrade the image of Nigeria within and aboard without putting in place workable structures/programmes of "solutionalising" Nigerian endemic problems of poverty, food crisis, unemployment, epileptic power supply, and the likes makes the rebranding project abstract, cosmetic and a wishful thinking. Thus, the paper advocates that the rebranding should begin by addressing the leadership question, poverty, food insecurity, corruption and the decay in Nigerian education system.

The World Tourism Conference which was held at Manila,Philippines in October 1980, considered the nature of tourism in all its aspects and the role tourism is bound to play in a dynamic and vastly changing world. The Manila Declaration on World Tourism argues that there are many constraint on the development of tourism, and groups of Nations should determine and study these constraints, and adopt measures aimed at removing their negative influence. It has been observed that violent crimes, civil unrest, kidnapping for ransom and terrorism to mention some, are enemies of tourism in Nigeria. Regrettably, the security warnings declared by Nation States and International Organizations against the danger posed by these constraints on tourism have been misconstrued as negative propaganda in N...

This analysis suggests that traditional approaches to development assistance are too narrowly confined by the logic of social engineering, centered almost exclusively on the material growth factors and depreciative of cultural variables. Reconceptualizing development assistance as an ideational process sheds light on the crucial role of collective intentionality and cultural varieties in determining success or failure of specific aid projects and programs that are designed to produce sustainable change in developing societies. Such reconceptualization calls for greater donor sensitivity to the socio-cultural landscape within developing societies, as well as for a greater recipient voice and responsibility in designing and implementing assistance projects and programs.

In the last four decades, Nigeria has been confronted with variegated problems-widespread poverty, political violence, corruption, natural disasters, HIV/AIDS scourge, various endemic diseases, communal clashes, unemployment, strikes, poor government performance, etc. Underlying these concerns is the need to create wealth and employment as a means of addressing some of the challenges facing youths, women and men. Thus, this paper focuses on wealth and employment creation among women in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State. It argues that with the right enabling environment created by government, private/public partnership, training and affirmative action wealth and employment creation is a distinct possibility. Creating wealth and employment among women will help curb social vices l...
