In Europe, new UNESCO World Heritage sites are the ancient stone walls, shelters and landscape of Stari Grad on the Adriatic island of Hvar in Croatia; 17th century fortifications along the borders of France; innovatively designed Modernist housing in Berlin, dating from 1910-1933; the Italian towns of Mantua and Sabbioneta, cited for architecture and their role in Renaissance culture; eight wooden churches dating to the 16th through 18th centuries in Slovakia; the Rhaetian Railway, which includes two historic railway lines in Italy and Switzerland that cross the Alps; and Mount Titano and the historic centre of San Marino, which dates to the 13th century.

The Poplar-Nanowin Rivers Park Reserve -- an 800,000-hectare area of boreal forest -- has had interim protection since 1998. But Poplar River First Nation is seeking permanent protection, and [Gary Doer] said if he is returned to the Premier's office that will happen.
A transmission line, say the NDP and residents of Poplar River, would also spoil the area and certainly would prevent the reserve from receiving UNESCO world heritage status -- putting it on the same exclusive list with the Great Barrier Reef, the Acropolis, the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge and the Grand Canyon.
Doer also visited Berens River on Friday, pledging $3.5 million for a two-station dialysis centre to serve the 3,200 residents of Berens River, Bloodvein, Poplar River and Pauingassi First Nations. It will help people suf...

Following a hugely successful inaugural event, organizers of the International Metisfest are expecting it to be bigger and better this year. About 7,000 people, from both Canada and the United States, took part in the 2009 Metisfest. "We're going to double that and there's a possibility of tripling it," says Dan Goodon, one of the organizers for the 2010 Métisfest, which will be staged Aug. 26-29. As was the case for the inaugural event, this year's Métisfest will be held at the International Peace Garden, which is situated on the Canada/United States border between Manitoba and North Dakota. The purpose of Métisfest is rather simple - to bring Métis people together to revel in their cultural and historical ties while enjoying plenty of entertainment such as fiddling, jigging and dancin...

For example, in Quttinirpaaq in Nunavut, there's a huge body of research already done. The archeological and cultural sites have been identified, there's a fairly complete inventory of the of flora and fauna, there's a plan for development, and generally, all the laws and policies are in place to protect the site. That's just about everything needed to help convince UNESCO the site is worth protecting and Canada has a good plan to do it.
We're targeting 2011 to make our pitch to UNESCO," he said. "We think that gives us enough time to get everything right. But we don't want to rush forward and weaken our chances for success.
UNESCO will only consider a site if it comes from a country's tentative list. That's each country's log of the 10-or-so top contenders for World Heritage status....

MANITOBA'S massive collection of Hudson's Bay Company records has been added to a prestigious list of the world's most important documents, joining the Gutenberg Bible and a handwritten original of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
UNESCO added the HBC archives to its register earlier this summer, but Premier Gary Doer, Hudson's Bay staff and a gaggle of archivists celebrated the honour Thursday, along with the donation of another batch of records from the Hudson's Bay Company's vaults.
The Bay handed over most of its archive to the Manitoba government in 1994 -- maps, paintings, treaties, letters, sales ledgers and a host of other records that document the company's fur trade, its opening up of the West and its role as Canada's early government. On Thursday, another bundle arrived, mostly r...

The Philippines province of Palawan is a place of great magic and is considered an ecological paradise. It is often called the Philippines' last ecological frontier. It is situated southwest of the main province of Luzon and, compared to most of the rest of the Philippines, is relatively unspoiled in terms of nature. Palawan authorities take great pains to keep Palawan clean, and recycling and other green practices are encouraged and enforced.
The trip up to Puerto Princessa Subterranean River National Park is an adventure in itself. Keeping your sense of humour and desire for an adventure is important. The road to the site is about half-paved, and half, well, unpaved. The unpaved portion is quite bumpy. But don't worry about driving it yourself. There are many companies that offer a v...

In Slovenia, visit magnificent Lake Bled and the beautiful Postojna caves. Other highlights include the enchanting Plitvice cascading lakes --16 turquoise pools connected by waterfalls; a visit to Medjugorije, a holy pilgrimage site in Bosnia and Herzegovina; the Konavle Valley and Dubrovnik, often called the "jewel of the Adriatic." In Montenegro, visit Budva and Sveti Stefan, town hotel frequented by Sofia Loren and Sylvester Stallone.
To see a Notman photograph on such a grand scale is to really see it for the first time," the museum said in a news release. "The tiny details that emerge in these large reproductions are truly impressive. The viewer is drawn into the photo and immersed in the scene.

TWO of Canada's oldest archival treasures will join the Gutenberg Bible, France's famed Bayeux Tapestry and more than 150 other globally significant cultural artifacts as part of a United Nations listing of the world's most precious documentary "monuments.
A 340-year-old collection of records detailing the operation of the Hudson's Bay Company -- spearhead of British claims in the future Canada -- and the even older archive of New France's earliest Catholic seminary are the first Canadian additions to the Memory of the World Registry, the textual and audio-visual equivalent of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
For two centuries, the HBC operated not just a business enterprise, but also a government," said the archives' UNESCO nomination. "These records illuminate important aspects of Can...
