  • Staff and students at Linden Meadows School launched this year's UNICEF Trick-or-Treat campaign on Thursday by going "a day without. Thursday's program launch featured an African drumming performance by students and a choir with children singing in English and an African language. A class from cole Robert Browning also attended and did a beautiful presentation to music with the students holding up signs to "Help UNICEF!" UNICEF is a great example of a charity that can work with schools to educate the students on global issues," said [Peter Bjornson]. "It's a win, win situation. The children are learning here and giving opportunities to students there in Africa."

  • So I'm not overly talented in the carving department, which is probably why I bombed in last year's competition, wherein I attempted to wow the judges with something called The Puking Pumpkin, a revolting jack-o'-lantern that appears to be violently losing its lunch via the genius artistic technique of having gallons of gooey pumpkin guts spewing from its gaping mouth. In an effort to improve on last year's performance, I'm going to do the one thing you'd expect from a journalist of my standing in the community -- I'm going to cheat. What's really exciting is this top-secret pumpkin is potentially even more nauseating than the vomiting pumpkin, which [Tricia Schers] agreed was "a classic." So I've got that going for me.

  • I'm surprised," [Andrew Collier] chuckled moments after his victory over 15 other teams of local celebrities and media personalities. "We didn't win the championship this year, but this (being named Pumpkin King) is a close second. "We were absolutely thrilled with the event. It's a great way to have fun and make a huge difference in the lives of kids in Africa," said Tricia Schers, regional director of UNICEF Canada's Prairies region.

  • Richard Boli fled war-torn Sudan, first finding refuge in Kenya before immigrating to Canada in 2000. Today, after graduating from the University of Winnipeg where he studied international development, the father of two is a dedicated UNICEF Canada volunteer, participating in the agency's speaker's bureau. I enjoy being with the kids especially when I speak to them and they have a positive response to me," said Boli, who lives in St. Vital. "We have the video images and sometimes I speak about my own experiences and that really helps a lot. They ask a lot of questions -- they want to know what's really happening.

  • Oh, you are sooooo gorgeous!" one starstruck female shopper gushed as she watched [Sylvia Kuzyk] calmly turning her pumpkin into a stylish-looking woman with a red beret, multicoloured scarf and bright-red lipstick. Then, glancing towards [John Sauder], the shopper cooed: "And he's sooooo good-looking! I asked [Fred Penner] whether his victory constituted the highlight of his entire life. "Absolutely!" is what he told me. "It's downhill from here. But this would not have happened without my son. He added the obscene elements." You could sense his son was deeply moved by this tribute. "Thanks Dad," [Damien] replied. "I feel the same way about you."

  • While the annual Halloween campaign is the busiest time for the agency, it is also hoping to attract volunteers willing to help educate students year-round. Throughout the school year, speakers' bureau volunteers are called upon by teachers and principals to do presentations on such topics as child rights, HIV and AIDS, child labour, children in war, and girls' education in poverty-stricken countries. They ask questions like, 'If war is instrumental in causing poverty, then why don't the world leaders put a stop to it?'" said [Pamela Bolton], a retired social worker. "It sounds like a simplistic question, but it's a profound question. You don't have good enough answers for them except to say 'When you guys are in positions of power when you're world leaders, remember that you asked t...
