  • This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

  • [Richard Miner] writes that "we have to accept" that all but a "small minority" of workers must earn some form of post-secondary credential. "We face a future with large numbers of unskilled workers looking for jobs that require skills they don't possess, and a large number of jobs that will go unfilled." If action is not taken "now," the outcome will be "unacceptable. Miner makes a number of references to the "current trend in education and training." His analysis depends on higher education participation rates remaining steady while Canada moves toward a "knowledge economy." But, if the economy is going to be fundamentally different in 20 years, why should we expect people to make the same choices they do now? For example, according to data for 2006, the Ontario labour market require...

  • Elias Woodworking isn't the only manufacturer that's optimistic about the future. [Morden]'s Huron Windows Corp. recently expanded its production plant in anticipation of higher sales, according to Morden community economic development officer Cheryl Digby. There are still jobs available, especially for skilled workers," she said. "There are jobs for unskilled workers, too, but they're just not as plentiful. Digby and Triple E's [Terry Elias] said one of the strengths of the Pembina Valley's manufacturing sector is that it's much more diversified now than it was 15 or 20 years ago. So just like the Manitoba economy, it's able to weather economic downturns better than most.

  • It is generally asserted that corporate social reporting (CSR) is a phenomenon of the late 20th century. The present paper contests this view by looking at the ways in which British companies reacted to the challenges they faced during the First World War, when they were exposed to charges of profiteering, as well as to industrial unrest and high taxation. The paper considers the use of the speeches made by chairmen at annual general meetings to refute these charges and defend themselves. It considers the relevance of these findings for contemporary social reporting, and suggests that investigation of the history of CSR is likely to show further examples of its use by companies to put forward "the business case".

  • There are also productivity issues. From 1996 to 2008 we were bringing in bodies at all costs. Many of them were unskilled and we were faced with safety issues. We're preparing for the same kind of run-up now, but we don't want to be in the same situation as we were in the past," he said. The positive side of the report's findings is that there is a lot of economic activity on the horizon in Manitoba, he said. Major projects include roadwork at the airport, the expansion of the Disraeli Bridge, a new Canad Inns hotel at Health Sciences Centre and a new Lakeview Management hotel at the airport, a new stadium for the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the home for furniture retailer IKEA.
