  • Engines use bearings to support crankshafts and camshafts. Crankshaft bearings are a type of bushing with several layers of material on them. A strong back layer provides support. A softer inner layer forms the actual bearing surface, while a very soft top layer holds small dirt particles so they don't damage rotating parts. Camshaft bearings may be made the same way but many of them are simply holes bored in the aluminum cylinder head material. The only way engine bearings can last is to separate them and the shafts that run inside them with a thin layer of oil. Without a layer of oil, there would be metal to metal contact and the bearing would quickly fail. That's why oil pressure is important in engines. Wheel bearings used to be a routine maintenance item. Every season, the bearings...

  • Mobil does make diesel engine oils with 15W-40 viscosity but they are blends -- partially synthetic and partially conventional oil. The higher viscosity 15W-40 oil would normally work better when the engine is subject to high loads and heat conditions, such as towing maximum loads or climbing a lot of hills, but synthetic oils retain their viscosity better at high heat conditions, so the 5W-40 oil should protect as well for normal driving. Another advantage of the wider viscosity range is better lubrication during cold starts, so engine wear is minimized. GM recommends Mobil 1 synthetic oil for several of their high performance passenger cars so the dealers probably can obtain the Mobil diesel oil through the same supplier. I think they made a good choice for your vehicle. I checked the...

  • So vehicles are a major contributor to air pollution -- right? This may have been true at one time and is still a common misconception, but modern vehicles produce very low emissions. According to information supplied by David Paterson, vice-president of Corporate and Environmental Affairs at General Motors, the fact is that even if all new cars were made emissions-free, 99 per cent of Canada's smog and greenhouse gas emissions would remain. Painting a wall with a gallon of water-based paint generates more smog emissions than driving a new GM SUV from Toronto to Vancouver and back. Burning a cord of wood creates more smog than a 2007 Trailblazer would driving around the circumference of the earth 37 times or 10 Chev SUVs would in their entire lifetime. Part of the emissions the Act is p...
