The global vaccine collection machinery are making good progress," said Dr. Frank Plummer, following a public lecture at the University of Winnipeg about the outbreak.
"The staff in Winnipeg did a rather amazing job of working out the logistics here," Plummer said.
"They got to ride on the president's plane, eat off his china, drink out of his glasses, which was quite an experience for them," Plummer said. "They were tickled to do that.

When we introduce new programs there is a slight decrease in uptake, and it takes a couple of years to kind of rebound from that -- particularly when there are times in the schedule when children get more than one injection," [Valerie Mann] said. "That's a fairly hard sell for parents.
"What we've seen for example is an increase in diphtheria in wounds and skin infections," Mann said. "It involves the respiratory tract and can be quite fatal in children."
Overall, Mann said the province's vaccination rates may be higher than statistics show, since some immunizations are not being entered into the database. Any child who misses one recommended vaccine is not entered into the database, since they're not considered "complete" for their age.

Because the second wave of the pandemic could be more severe than the first, Brandon Regional Health Authority CEO Carmel Olson said the hospital is looking at its resources in place to deal with severely ill people such as its ICU capacity and its capacity to serve the needs of the surrounding regions as well.

If Canada's pandemic plan and widespread vaccination program works as it should, [David Butler-Jones] said he hopes the H1N1 flu that's expected to hit again this fall takes fewer lives than a regular flu would. He said vaccination blitzes and public awareness campaigns could become the norm and help prevent deaths from seasonal flu in years to come.
At best, about a third of Canadians get annual flu shots. Butler-Jones wouldn't define Canada's pandemic vaccination target or say how many Canadians need immunizations in order for the health system to cope effectively with serious patients.
Canadians who got sick with H1N1 this spring -- more than 10,000 cases have been confirmed -- are immune, but an H1N1 flu shot won't hurt someone who has already had the disease.
