At Rasoi it is possible to snack at three high, bar-type tables, but the food is primarily intended for at-home eating. Also, as it happens, the Indian specialties are mostly the kind that hold up well in transit. Not only that, the portions are generous, at prices that are astonishingly low, with most entrees from $4.99 to $8.99. There's even better value among the combos: $4.99 for chickpea curry, rice, a vegetable samosa and a canned drink; $5.99 for two pieces of tandoori chicken, a naan, vegetable samosa and canned drink; or $6.50 for butter chicken, rice, vegetable samosa and canned drink.
If you shy away from spices, your best bet might be one of the milder kormas, in a silken, cream-rich sauce studded with cashews -- a good buy with such main ingredients as beef, lamb, chicken, ...

At first, I thought this angst was caused by my age. Was the fact that I'm turning 40 next month going to change everything about me, including my hearty winter tolerance? It's bad enough that I'm getting wrinkles and pimples at the same time. But it'd be an awfully cruel joke of nature if I became permanently grumpy too. If I stay this way, my husband will want to learn to hibernate. And to be honest -- I'd let him.
There was a time when I'd scoff at minus forty. I'd be willing to ski when the chairlifts would freeze up. But not right now. I don't want to leave my house. If my kids didn't need to eat something other than peanut butter and crackers or if I could find a way to start a vegetable garden in my living room, I wouldn't leave my home until April.

It started with papri chat -- a cool mixture of crisp wafers and chickpeas in a tamarind-streaked yogurt sauce, and good, despite the absence of the promised potatoes ($5.99). We also liked the nicely spiced pakora vegetable fritters (four for $6.99). Among the entrees that followed, only butter chicken disappointed -- the rich and velvety tomato-based sauce was luscious, but the bland chunks of tandoori-cooked chicken tasted like intruders, as though they'd just been added as an afterthought.
Our lassi drinks were refreshing, albeit thinner on the yogurt than most I've had, but $5 was a shocking price for a drink that rarely reaches $3 elsewhere. Skimpily-filled samosas were dry (two for $5.99) . Alloo tikki potato cakes were moister but unexceptional in flavour (two for $5.99, or $6.9...

Entrees cost from $4.99 (for chickpea curry) to $8.99 (for certain chicken dishes), but note -- rice isn't included, and will set you back another $2.50. Tops among those sampled were tender, flavourful chunks of lamb stewed in a mellow brown curry sauce; beef bhoona -- a particularly tasty stir-fry with mushrooms, tomatoes, green peppers and onions; and plump shrimp korma in a richly creamy sauce with cashews.
There are also several other bargain combos, which include, along with the main dish, rice, vegetable samosa and a canned drink -- chickpea curry for instance ($4.99), beef or chicken curry ($5.99) or butter chicken ($6.99). There are also special dinners at $14.99 for two, $24.99 for four and $33.99 for six.
This tiny place is self-described as a Chinese snack house, but many o...

The long weekend of pumpkin pies, whipped cream, turkey and the entire Thanksgiving meal made me want to create an article that showcased a traditional side dish in an untraditional way. Rose Wasyliw had requested a recipe for Spanish rice casserole. Thanks to Tamara Greenlay of Holland for the quick and easy Spanish rice recipe, and to Myron Myles for the Spanish rice casserole.
Heat 15 ml (1 tbsp) butter in a large skillet set over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; saute 1 minute. Add the rice and vermicelli; saute 4 minutes. Stir in broth, water, thyme, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, stirring well. Reduce the heat to low, cover and cook about 25 minutes, until the rice and vermicelli are tender and the liquid has been absorbed. Stir in the remaining butter and serve.
Taste Tester Notes: An easy to make and very tasty, nicely spiced casserole. I used 5 ml (1 tsp) of chili powder and recommend including the cumin, as the small amount adds a lot to the flavour. Use...
