Work Solutions is a suite of four innovative technologies combined into a vehicle in-dash computer network. Powered by Microsoft Windows CE with Windows Auto (no Microsoft jokes now!), the Works Solution design enables high -peed Internet access in the vehicle. The Internet access will be available in the U.S. on the Sprint Mobile Broadband network, but unfortunately, talks in Canada between Ford and the mobile data providers are occurring at a slower pace, so don't expect this feature in a Ford F150 in Canada until 2010 models. However, it sounds like the system will be able to be retrofitted to the 2009 models if desired. Tool Link is the third application provided by the Work Solutions system. Tool Link doesn't require web access, although with a little imagination it could be integr...

USING MULTIPLE PROPULSION systems to provide motive power, the term 'hybrid vehicle' most commonly refers to gasoline-electric models such as the popular Toyota Prius (a mid-size car with a 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder engine), the world's first mass-produced hybrid. With the option of running on either regular fuel and/or electric batteries to power internalcombustion engines and electric motors, these hybrids no longer even need to plugin as regenerative braking recharges the batteries by capturing kinetic energy. The city's fleet has everything from buses through ambulances and fire trucks - we do maintenance on police vehicles but don't manage them - snow ploughs, pickup trucks, and we look after twenty garbage trucks as well. Our first hybrid was the Prius; it's the mayors car. We acquir...
I appreciate your comments, and I have no doubt that your fleet of vehicles is in great condition because of your personal attention. But for the average driver who checks under the hood only to add washer fluid and relies on his auto service provider to keep the wheels running smoothly, following a time-based maintenance schedule is not the best way to do things. First, regardless of the improvements in engine oil in recent decades, and the advent of synthetic oils, engine oil still needs to be changed on a regular basis of every three to four months or every 5,000 to 6,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. Even the cheapest regular oil you will find in the discount bin of some dollar store doesn't "break down" over time. It gets contaminated with the byproducts of burning gasoline o...

Vehicle telematics combines wireless telecommunications with global positioning satellite (GPS) and computer-diagnostics technology. With it, fleet managers can link computer functions to individual cars or trucks, regardless of where each is. The technology has two basic functions: a locator/director, where managers can monitor all vehicles and their operations en-route using hardware consisting of a simple recording system, without the need for installing an on-board computer; and a diagnostic tool, where vehicle systems, such as oil levels, brakes or communications, are monitored for problems. Prices can range up to $1,375 per vehicle for the Telepod hardware and up to $50 a month for hosted Autovision software.

The AVL units offer many advantages that will support EMS professionals as they provide critical care to Manitobans including: identifying the closest ambulance that can respond to an incoming call most quickly, helping paramedics find the location of a call in real-time and informing them of road closures or other delays, improving patient and crew safety through real-time updates to MTCC on location and speed, and enhancing the fleet's reliability and efficiency through accurate and consistent monitoring of each vehicle.
