One of the issues that gets full-blown attention is when a northern community has animal control problems, often following an attack or bite incident. Sadly, the attention given to the issue grows immensely when an animal attack results in a death. Such as it did in January of 2010 when a young boy from Canoe Lake Cree Nation named Keith was mauled to death by a pack of roaming dogs. His story was on everyone's radar.

It's a good thing for the vets to be coming forward, however, it's too little, too late," Neepawa animal owner Karen Dreveski said in an e-mail response to the veterinary statement.
"If there is no lawsuit available, I recommend jail terms," Dreveski said. "The animal cremation business is a grey area with not enough policing. We have got to push for tighter regulations.
"Questions have been raised about veterinarians' knowledge of the events at Domestic Animal Cremation and Misty Gardens Pet Cemetery and why veterinarians did not take action," the statement said.
