27 documents for vice-presidential debate
  • With roughly 70 million viewers on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox broadcast network, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, Telefutura and BBC America, along with another 3.5 million who watched on PBS, last week's vice-presidential debate out-drew every previous American debate except for the one between presidential candidates Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980, which attracted nearly 81 million viewers.

  • Low turnout was one. Last time, CBC radio worried for weeks about how low our turnout was going to be. Zealous reporters interviewed simpleton after simpleton who said that they won't be voting, have never voted, and how voting is of no use because their vote won't 'count.' Where do they find these people? Another theme that captivated voters was negative fear tactics. Canadians, we were told, were facing a stark choice. Our stark choice was between "Canadian values" and a scary hidden agendum from right-wing Christians who believed in dinosaurs. They didn't scare me though. What's the worst thing that can happen if they win? They'll turn the other cheek, that's what. So far in this election there are no themes. The puffin doesn't really count. I suspect that Canadians are so mesmerized...

  • The e-mail said, "Democrat vice-presidential nominee [Joe Biden]'s gaffes have become so excessive that we've now dedicated an entire site, which includes an interactive timeline, map and videos to track Biden's most noteworthy fumbles and missteps since becoming [Barack Obama]'s running mate. Sure, [Sarah Palin] appears at plenty of rallies and has proved she can deliver a speech. But in the five weeks since she has been named the vice-presidential candidate, she has sat for only three hand-selected interviews -- ABC News' Charlie Gibson, Fox News' Sean Hannity, and Katie Couric of CBS -- and taken four impromptu questions last week in New York City. Palin has not been questioned in a news conference. The sheltering of Palin fosters a suspicion that she is ill-equipped to serve in the...

  • If this is the kind of ideas this 'think-tank' comes up with, it needs to be reminded that it should be concerned with issues of social and economic justice. Imagine if your neighbour decided that since they overspent their budget, that they would find a reason to pass this deficit on to you. What kind of justice is this? This 'oops, we overspent, who can bail us out?' attitude is a lazy-minded, if not immoral approach. In her article on Oct. 31 (Fletcher joins Toews in cabinet), Mia Rabson mentions that Steven Fletcher is "only the third Winnipeg Conservative in history to make it into cabinet and the first since Gordon Churchill in 1957." I assume that the writer means literally "Winnipeg Conservative" and does not count the prominent MP from Provencher, [Jake Epp], who served in thre...

  • Congruence. When someone totally believes what they're saying, there is an automatic synchronicity between words and gestures. Watch to see when non-verbal signals are aligned with the spoken word and when they are out of sync (a cue that there is some conflict between what's being said and the speaker's true feelings). Hand gestures. There are a variety of hand gestures that speak for themselves: Hand-to-mouth gestures (the hand brushes the lips or touches the nose) are deception cues that people unconsciously use when lying -- or when listening to someone else who they believe is lying. Open palm gestures are convincing signals of candour. And the "steepling hands" gesture (palms separated slightly, fingers of both hands spread and finger tips touching) is a display of high conf...

  • It's also, however, one of the things many Canadians seem to think is a waste of time. If I had a dollar for every time I've been told by someone in this election the entire thing is boring or useless I could retire tomorrow. The choice the American voters make will have some impact on Canada, but it's kind of the same impact a distant relative has on your daily life. Our election, meanwhile, could affect everything we do. Will we get hit with a carbon tax or try to save our planet without it? Will we change the justice laws to come down harder on teen criminals? Will there be national day care or payments directly to families? Will the Wheat Board's monopoly go on or be terminated? There is nobody at that table who couldn't speak his or her mind for fear of his or her supporters being ...
