  • [Dave Chomiak] said the changes are the result of recommendations made after last summer's inquiry into the police investigation and prosecution of the 2005 death of Crystal Taman. Taman was killed after a then off-duty city police officer crashed into her car.

  • Tom Oleson has it all wrong. I resent that Oleson has painted all victims with one brush by referring to victims as belonging to a "cult of victimhood." His statement that victims' rights are a big deal in the courts these days is absolutely true and it's about time. Victims have long been forgotten. Has he forgotten that victims are still not represented in the courts? The defence attorney represents the accused, the Crown represents the Queen and the judge represents a higher power who interprets the law. The only time a victim has a voice in the courts is through their victim impact statement. This is the only time that the court has an opportunity to hear what has happened to the victim (especially when the victim has been murdered). Does Oleson actually think that victims and their...

  • Human trafficking is a global human rights issue that has profound and tragic repercussions for millions of women and children every year. In North America, Canada is currently a destination for victims of trafficking, and a transit route into the United States. Traffickers have exploited the open border between the United States and Canada to perpetuate a modern form of slavery that forces oppressed women and children into forced labour and/or prostitution. Currently, Canada has no formal policy or program to provide protection, assistance, and services to victims. A multidimensional approach to combating human trafficking is necessary in Canada, with legislation that provides protection to victims escaping the web of trafficking.

  • Regulating administrative monopoly is the major task of China's "anti-monopoly law" and the greatest challenge in its enforcement. "Anti-monopoly law" has done a special chapter on administrative monopoly for the first time, which is a significant breakthrough of our country's legislation on the regulation of administrative monopoly. But, after all, "anti-monopoly law" is a new law, and due to the limitations of legislation, there are many system deficiencies, on the regulation of administrative monopoly in China's "Anti-monopoly law", which make it can not fully come into play. So, it is necessary to perfect the measures that can make up for the system deficiencies.

  • [The Palestinian children] are taught to hate, fight, kill and destroy" (Naveh, 2003). The Palestinian child is presented simply as a product of an alien process. Though both Palestinian and Israeli children are victims of the conflict, Israeli Jewish children are seen as proper innocent victims of terrorism in contrast to Palestinian children who are often perceived as dangerous props of irresponsible parents, a conniving Palestinian Authority and desperate militant groups. A rightwing think tank queries "How did these children come to be exposed to danger? Why are Palestinian children allowed to confront a military force? Why are they present among rioters, snipers, and terrorists? And how is the press always in the right place to photograph such acts of false heroism" (Prism Group, ...

  • I have been quiet for too long," said the grieving man, flanked by his three teary-eyed children. "We decided we were going to take the high road. "It's time for everyone to stand up," he said. "It's time for the public to say this can't go on." Manitoba's Victims' Bill of Rights, the document that [ROBERT Taman] sees every time he turns on his computer, says that all victims of crime "should be treated with courtesy, compassion and respect."

  • The first phase of the inquiry, beginning June 2, will determine whether the services provided to the [Crystal Taman] family complied with requirements of the Victims' Bill of Rights. The second phase, to begin July 2, will examine the investigation and prosecution of Harvey-Zenk. That's expected to last until mid-August. Harvey-Zenk was later given a conditional sentence -- essentially house arrest with a curfew -- last fall after a joint recommendation by the special prosecutor and Harvey-Zenk's lawyer.
