Amas Nadai, Israel's ambassador to the People's Republic of China, presented honorary Israeli citizenship to the family of Fengahan Ho in recognition of his efforts to save Jews in Austria during the Nazi regime.
As China's consul general in Vienna during the years 1938-1940, Ho ignored his country's instructions, defied Nazi threats and issued some 30,000 visas to German and Austrian Jews who fled to Shanghai. On Hitler's instructions, the Japanese who occupied Shanghai in 1937 tried to persecute the Jewish refugees. The local Shanghai government, however, refused to carry out Japan's orders, arguing that the Jews had entered China with legal visas.
The ceremony in [Yiyang] was held on the occasion of the re-burial of Ho's ashes in his home town. Fengahan Ho, nicknamed "China's Schindl...

Our journey will begin Oct. 5 with an overnight flight from Winnipeg to Krakow, the ancient capital and final resting place of the kings of Poland. Our private motor coach will take us from the Pope John Paul II Airport just outside Krakow to the centrally located Atrium Hotel, our home for the next three nights. The hotel is located within walking distance of Krakow's church of St. Florian's, where the future pope served as curate at the start of his four decades in the city.

The next day, we'll head south for a day's visit to Montenegro. It's about an hour drive along the coast. If we are lucky, locals will be out along the roadside offering samples of the region's famous plum brandy and fruit preserves.
We'll spend a day in Pula, the commercial centre of Istria, which is dominated by one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. They still use it for concerts and theatrical performances, more than 2,000 years after it was built. In the afternoon, we'll take a ferry to the island of Brijuni, once the summer home of Yugoslav dictator Josip Tito and now a Croatian national park. (Pula is also [Sonja Paunovic]'s birthplace, so I might have to let her do some of the talking here.)
The next day, we'll head across the Istrian peninsula and be within...

Don't be put off by [Pristina]'s drab Communist-era apartment blocks and muddy trash-strewn streets. The city is working hard to clean up its act, and tucked among the tenements are some of southeastern Europe's most lively cafes and bars. Demographically, it's much like Dublin: a youthful city where half the population is under age 25.
Pristina's top watering holes change every few months, but among the current hot spots is "212," owned by an Albanian-American and named for New York City's area code. Quench your thirst with a bottle of Kosovo's signature Peja lager, or just drink in the live jazz.
Kosovo's beleaguered Serb minority doesn't share this pro-America sentiment. But visitors, regardless of the passport they carry, are likely to be offered a glass of home-distilled "slivovitz...

If you asked 10 people on a North American street who [] is, 10 wouldn't have a clue," said one Audi executive last year. "That's too bad, because he's brilliant.
He adopted Japanese-style working practices, cut costs and urged VW to share more parts among its brands. Piech pushed the automaker into export markets, drove VW and Audi upmarket into segments in which they had never competed and he successfully negotiated the purchase of Lamborghini and Bentley while establishing Bugatti Automobiles.
When VW acquired Skoda, a Czech brand, and Seat of Spain, Piech set out to get economies of scale by using VW parts and components for all vehicles across the range. Within three years of his arrival at VW, the automaker had reversed its losses and watched profits climb to more...
