Whatever, the place is a delight, and one of the city's prettier Vietnamese restaurants to boot dusty pink walls adorned with Asian artifacts, and a charming curtain of beads dividing the space for greater intimacy. The menu is part Vietnamese, part Chinese, with a sizable selection of vegetarian versions in both categories. It's a fairly lengthy one (with most prices from $5.50 to $9.50), distinguished by the occasional dish that isn't listed on every other menu in town. More to the point, the food is delicious. Noodles also offer a variety of choices. Another outstanding item was a three-in-one course -- two kinds of grilled, sausage-like patties, one wrapped in la lop (a kind of spinach), the other seasoned with lemon grass, as well as a super-sized steamed meatball, all three marvellously flavourful. There was also an addictive slaw-like salad with slices of beef. Some other selections may vary from day to day -- I do know that we didn't get the listed beef congee, but I can't remember which dish replaced it. These new tenants aren't to blame for the destruction of the mural, which was already gone when they moved in. And for the first time the food isn't Vietnamese. It's Somali, the city's first. Well, one can't mourn the loss of one Vietnamese restaurant in a city teeming with so many good ones. And one can certainly celebrate the addition of a new cuisine, especially since in this case it is delicious. It's an approach I recommend for the most fun, but only if you aren't in a hurry -- I suspect it may have taxed the kitchen since, after the appetizers, our main courses straggled out slowly, one after another, and in no particular order.
