  • One of Monterey's biggest players in the California wine industry is J. Lohr. It produces Riesling and Valdiguié (formerly known as Napa Gamay or Gamay Beaujolais) in the region, as well as the J. Lohr 2005 "Riverstone" Chardonnay (Arroyo Seco AVA -- $19.17, available at Liquor Marts and beyond). Riverstone's nose offers toasty vanilla and ripe red apple, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with soft creamy oak, good acidity (thanks to the cooler climate) and ripe, zippy citrus flavours. It's a great Chardonnay that's made in quite large quantities. J. Lohr also produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Paso Robles region, but I'll talk more about that area next week. Amidst the smaller boutique wineries in Monterey, there is one that dwarfs the rest. San Bernabe is an interesting...

  • I felt as though I'd been transported into a Lord of the Rings set, and awaited the king's return through the ancient gates. Majestic mountains, azure sea, and fascinating history are just a few of Dalmatia's enticing attractions. Mouth-watering Croatian cuisine, fine local wines and exceptional service were offered aboard a masterfully crafted 105-foot wooden yacht, allowing a first-class Croatia experience. He proudly explained the history of Vis. His family lineage can be traced back to 1499 and [Miso Poduje], who speaks five languages and is a veteran of the 1991-'95 war, has given up city life in Zagreb to resurrect his grandfather's vineyard. We walked amongst the old vines and listened to Miso explain how to make a great wine, then rode back to his cellar and enjoyed the fruits ...

  • After two long weeks spent exploring various winemaking regions, vineyards and wineries in Chile, I'm home with a slightly clearer picture in my head of the direction of the country's wines and the issues Chilean vintners now face. So once I've had a chance to tackle the mountain of CD-ROMs, technical sheets, promo materials, anecdotes and tasting notes that I've brought home, I should be able to tackle some more specifics. The solution was to graft the world's "noble" grape varieties, which make up the bulk of wine grapes, to North American rootstocks, which are resistant to phylloxera. Chilean vines have not typically been grafted to North American rootstocks, making them unique in their "purebred" heritage. Their isolation from the world's deadliest vineyard disease is a source of b...

  • Fetzer is one of the most environmentally responsible wineries in California -- all the grapes they grow are organic (they also buy non-organic grapes) and the winery itself is made out of mostly recycled material. Between 1990 and 2009, Fetzer doubled production while reducing waste to landfill by 96 per cent. The Valley Oaks Gewurztraminer shows great varietal characteristics of this grape: apricot and peach, light perfume and spiciness, with a hint of lychee nut. It's just barely off-dry, with peach and apricot flavours showing quite nicely. 86/100 Cono Sur is one of Chile's biggest wineries, and practises some great sustainable winemaking and grape growing. For example, they introduced a white spider to eat the vine-damaging red spider rather than use insecticide. This big Chilean r...

  • We get tons of visitors in the summer," says Hans Kiltz, owner of Blue Grouse Estate Winery, which is best known for its award-winning Pinot Gris. "We can easily have 500 visitors in a weekend. "The thing is," Kiltz says, "we're trying to create an identity for Vancouver Island wine so you cannot mix it with wine from other growing regions. "All these wines are crisp and fruity and lively," he adds. "That's what we want here. They're different from any other growing region. They complement our West Coast food very well. People here eat a lot of seafood. They eat chicken and lamb. It's not a beef and potatoes place. These wines are going very well."
