The argument is not just about a possible lapse of judgment more than 30 years ago. It also affects Poland's more recent past. Some believe that [Lech Walesa]'s seemingly erratic behavior and poor choice of advisers as president from 1990-95 was the result of blackmail (he strongly denies this too). That goes straight to the most divisive question in modern Polish politics.
For a large chunk of Polish opinion, the "PRL," as the Polish People's Republic is known, was fundamentally illegitimate. Everything that happened -- including much so-called "dissident" activity -- was a sham and a fraud, orchestrated by Polish or Soviet secret police.
From that viewpoint, Lech Walesa is a Polish trademark, symbolizing the country's courageous struggle for freedom: damage him, and you damage Poland....

In 1999: ACC ready for horrors of Y2K SIXTY YEARS AGO The federal government will pay $5 million a year to approximately 100 of Canada's municipalities as federal grants in lieu of taxation. TWENTY YEARS AGO Solidarity leader Lech Walesa, the once-obscure Polish electrician now called "the spiritual godfather" of a new generation of democracy, blinked back tears as he was presented the U.S. highest honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George Bush for the events taking place in Berlin.

The Free Press editorially faults the Nobel committee for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama before he has achieved "tangible results" (Nobel taints prize, Oct. 10). But you ignore a recent major step of Obama toward world peace: He reversed ex-president Bush's program to build anti-Iranian missiles with missile bases in Poland, which Putin viewed as a grievous Cold War offence against Russia. Following Obama's reversal, Russia offered international co-operation for possible sanctions against Iran, after which Ahmadinejad conceded foreign inspection of Iran's newly exposed underground nuclear facility. For the present at least, the likelihood of Israel going to war against Iran by bombing its potential nuclear-bomb sites is postponed. Obama deserves credit for this. Whether ...

Today's new moon is probably the best day all year to think how you can improve your closest friendships and partnerships. You'll have to confine your resolutions to your own behaviour because you can't change others. TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
We all need friends because we need to talk to others, and we need their emotional support. And, of course, the key to having friends is to be friendly -- genuinely friendly. "Fake friendly" only attracts friends who are fakes.

Democracy may be a word familiar to and used by most, but is sometimes used in conflict with what it truly means. In the truest sense democratic ideas have evoked some of our world history's greatest, most profound, poignant and moving expressions of human will, intellect, concept and values. Whether it was Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence or Lincoln's declaration that democracy is a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" or Lech Walesa's "Let Poland be Poland," these are the ideals that world citizens have fought for throughout history to better their lives and entrust the authority of democracy and its instruments with those of noble thought and mind.
It is for these valid reasons that Deputy Mayor Brenda Leipsic has moved and Coun. Scott Fielding...
