Cape Verde coast guards said they have located the boat" about 840 kilometres off Cape Verde, said French Defence Ministry spokesman Capt. Jerome Baroe. France was involved in search efforts, together with several other countries. Russian naval ships were ordered to pursue the ship after the Cape Verde coast guard reported the freighter was outside the country's territorial waters to the north, Russian ambassador to Cape Verde, Alexander Karpushin, told The Associated Press.
Guinea has now moved on to the next stage of the process. "Dadis" began talking about running for president himself last August. "I have been taken hostage by the people, a part of the people, with some saying that President Dadis cannot be a candidate and others saying President Dadis has to be a candidate," he told Radio France Internationale in an interview. In a burst of frankness, he added if he did not stand for election, another military officer would take over the country. Various political groups that had opposed [Lansana Conte] for years now saw democracy being stolen from them again. They held a rally in Conakry's sports stadium in late September to protest against Dadis's presidential plans. Lieutenant Abubakar "Toumba" Diakite, another member of the military junta and the h...

When it came time to plan my vacation, I decided to take advantage of this closer proximity and travel to Gambia (officially known as the "Republic of the Gambia" or "The Gambia") in West Africa. I was initially planning to do a yoga retreat, but changed my mind at the last minute. I realized that I wouldn't be comfortable going to such a poor country to focus solely on my own health and well-being while most of the local people struggled for basic healthcare.
Next up on Nov. 4 and 5 is guitarist Lionel Loueke and singer Gretchen Parlato. Loueke and Parlato are not yet very well known in Canada, but their stars are rising very quickly. Loueke, who some might remember from last year's Jazz Winnipeg Festival as Herbie Hancock's guitarist, is from Benin, West Africa. He made his way from there to Paris, later to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and then to the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, then in Los Angeles, where he caught the attention of Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard, who soon after hired him for his band. Loueke has since gone on to tour the world with his own trio, blending West African harmonies and rhythms with jazz to create a fresh and energetic sound. March 4 and 5 find trombone star Steve Turre...

This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

In Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland, about a quarter of adults are HIV-positive -- a number 10 times higher than anywhere else in the world. HIV testing and treatment are more widely available in Africa than ever before, and while this has extended many lives, it has had little effect on the incidence of HIV. Last year, three important studies showed that male circumcision can reduce HIV transmission by about 60 per cent, but the practice is still rare on much of the continent. Condom use remains dangerously inconsistent, and strict abstinence-until-marriage-and-fidelity-thereafter is rare everywhere. Even under the new UN figures, 1.7 million Africans became infected last year. Today, long-term overlapping sexual partnerships are widely acknowledged -- by the UN AIDS progr...

For a country like Nigeria -- one of the largest economies in west Africa -- we don't have a reliable and affordable supply of electricity," said conference spokesman Ed Onyebuchi. "It's a critical problem for Nigeria...It affects every average Nigerian." He said Manitoba Hydro has had someone working in the nation of 150 million people since 2002. "Why talk about 2020 when people are starving in 2009? You can't even get a doctor in a Nigerian hospital," said Okwudili, who visited Nigeria last summer. "It's sad." The diaspora organization member planned to attend the conference but said the time and money involved might have been better spent in the country with the problems.
