Parents and their adolescent children tend to disagree about children's responsibilities in the family, particularly when it comes to caring for parents and household chores. We explored whether this disagreement is similar in three ethnic groups or whether it depends on ethnic background and acculturation. More particularly we investigated: (a) how adolescents and parents perceive family obligations and to what extent their perceptions differ, (b) to what extent family obligations are shaped by ethnic background and acculturation experiences, and (c) to what extent intergenerational discrepancies in family obligations are linked to adolescents' well-being (i.e., self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological problems, and behavioral problems). Seventy-four Surinamese, 115 Turkish, and 9...

A first line of research that appears obvious to us concerns people's motivation for PEBs. Because people appear to be relatively inactive regarding the environmental situation and a sense of emergency is now fuelling the debate about the importance of doing something, proenvironmental groups, behavioural scientists, and to some extent governments are increasingly attempting to find ways to motivate people to stop and then reverse the degradation of environmental conditions. An important observation about initiatives put forward is that they reflect particular ways to motivate people to act. For instance, strategies can take the form of new technology (e.g., more fuel-efficient cars and the production of green or renewable energy), structural initiatives (e.g., access to a curbside recy...

It is well established that marital relationships remain integral to individual and family well-being and that some marriages are happier than others. It is also well documented that continuing high rates of immigration contribute to increasingly diverse marital patterns in Canadian society. Drawing from life course theory, the purpose of this paper is to further explore cultural, sociodemographic, and relationship factors and their association with midlife happiness. Data are drawn from in-depth interviews with a sample of 390 middle-generation married parents living in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. Canada from four cultural groups: British, Chinese, Indo/East Indian, and Southern-European. Both quantitative and qualitative results reveal similarities in midlife marital happiness ...

The paper presents a conceptual framework charting the agency of diversity managers in organizational change. Evaluating and critiquing the contemporary models of organizational change management, we identify three concepts, which are situatedness, relationality, and praxis, for understanding the diversity managers' agency in the organizational change process. Each orienting concept is explored in the context of current diversity management literature and their combined explanatory power is discussed.

To explore the internal dynamics of intercultural marriage, we conducted in-depth interviews with 18 married couples, of whom one partner was bom in Israel and the other immigrated from the former Soviet Union. The interviews focused on the contentious issues of everyday life: selfidentity, language use, cultural consumption, relations with the families/friends, division of household labor, and childrearing. The findings point to a clear tendency for immigrants to make most adjustments to the norms and expectations of the Israeli spouses and their social networks. For most immigrant spouses, the selective acculturation they had hoped for at the outset in fact morphed into relentless assimilation. The Israelization was expressed in the exclusive use of Hebrew in these homes; preference o...

This paper investigates the factors which influence the ability of resettled refugee parents to envisage their adolescents' futures and support them in setting and achieving goals. It is based on the findings of a study of 10 refugee families from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, two to three years after they had arrived in Melbourne, Australia. Analysis of the findings draws on Antonovsky's 'sense of coherence' framework to highlight the conditions which assist refugee parents to negotiate their social environment and develop realistic ambitions for their families' futures. This framework is also used to point to ways in which refugee families might best be assisted by host communities to guide and support their children and thus overcome some of the potential intergenerationa...
