Aylmer's tomato soup, eight tins for $1; Rose margarine, four pounds, $1; white Manitoba sugar, 10 pound bag, 79 cents; Townhouse strawberries or raspberries, two 15-oz. tins, 59 cents; Winesap apples, seven-pound bag, 89 cents. THIRTY YEARS AGO U.S. District Judge Charles Richey ruled today that North Dakota and the federal government cannot proceed with construction of the Garrison diversion irrigation project until Congress re-authorizes the plan.
Molasses has some pretty interesting nutritional benefits. Once upon a time, folks like Granny [Clampett] put molasses on toast as a nutritional supplement -- and for good reason. Just 15 ml (1 tablespoon) contain 6 per cent of a day's recommended intake of iron, 4 per cent of magnesium, and 2 per cent of vitamin B6. That same tablespoon is worth 60 calories, compared to refined white sugar at 45 calories a tablespoon, which only provides carbohydrates and nothing else. There are lots of recipe sites online, but if you're looking for hard copy, old cookbooks seem to be the best source for molasses recipes, probably because molasses was more commonly used a few decades back. (That's partly because molasses was cheaper than refined sugar.) Virtually none of the contemporary cookbooks I lo...
Understanding of international competitiveness has primarily been pursued in terms of economic variables and market conditions. The roles of the government, the socio-cultural-political context in international business, and their effects on competitiveness have largely been ignored. This study involves an investigation into the circumstances of international competitiveness and how it is pursued by firms from different sugar producing and marketing nations. It employs a qualitative method of comparative analysis between Australia, Brazil, and the European Union. This paper highlights the variations of the theme of international competitiveness reflected through different strategies chosen by the three dominant sugar economies

I like to call it a kitchen manual that not only helps you on your way to health but also gives you recipes. The book is a holistic approach. It looks at the physical, emotional, mental and at the spiritual, but the majority of it is nutritional," she says. "I wrote Eat Away Illness so I could put what I taught in my classes into a book so people didn't have to come and take a class. "I went gluten and dairy-free because a lot of people are being diagnosed with gluten intolerance. Everything in the book is gluten-free and if it's not, it has other choices," she says. "And this book doesn't have anything unhealthy in it. A lot of the gluten-free products out there now are made with white rice flour, tapioca starch, potato starch and lots of sugar. My book has no sugar and all the glute...
A study examines accounting in a sugar refinery from 1900 to 1920 in two arenas of operation. The geography of accounting enabled the workers at Chelsea to have their working experience sequestered by the company. Accounting routinized their work at the refinery, enabling their labor to become monitored, empty of meaning, and, at times, overwhelming. The ideology of accounting provided the company with an instrument of evasion to silence the voice of labor and an instrument of self-deception designed to justify and insulate the authoritarian hierarchy of the company and the power of its Australian general manager, Edward Knox. Accounting became an ideology that sought to legitimate the exploitation of the workforce and the generous return to shareholders.

When my customers come in, we are always chit-chattin' about different health things... They often have questions for me about which green tea is good," says [Pearlene Clunis], who designs about 80 per cent of the clothing in her store. "We didn't eat any white flour, any white sugar, any white rice. (My mother) had a big garden and she would freeze the vegetables from the garden ...We didn't drink any pop," says Clunis, who grew up near Ashern. Clunis says she's not concerned about customers crash dieting just so they can get a discount on an item at her store. "I'm not too worried about that. I think most women are pretty sensible.
ROSEMARY BEACH, Fla. -- It's fall, it's warm, and the sugar-white beaches along Florida's northwest panhandle are looking very inviting. Yep, it's a great place, maybe the best spot anywhere to be right now,'' [Jason Bell] says, scanning the seaside territory where he's worked for the past half-dozen years or so. "We'll have snowbirds who will swim here late into November. I guess the water's about 65 degrees (Fahrenheit; 19 Celsius) then, which I guess is a whole lot better than the frozen stuff,'' smiles Bell.
A 20-oz. hazelnut latte from Second Cup made with two per cent milk contains 540 calories, 19 grams of fat and 70 grams of sugar. A slightly lighter option is a 20-oz. vanilla bean latte from the same chain. This contains 370 calories, 47 grams of sugar and 12 grams of fat. To reduce your calories even further, order the same beverage with skim milk. That would give you 330 calories, 48 grams of sugar and five grams of fat. The good news about lattes is that they contain calcium. Though juices are filled with Vitamin C and other nutrients, don't be tempted to treat them as substitutes for fruits and vegetables. Juices are high in sugar and don't contain the fibre of whole fruit. For example, one cup of orange juice contains about 110 calories and 22 grams of sugar. White grape juice is ...
The Canadian Wheat Board's future has been uncertain since the Harper government came to power two years ago with a promise to end the board's monopoly over wheat and barley sales. [Ian White]'s predecessor, Adrian Measner, was fired for his outspoken defence of the CWB's monopoly in late 2006, as the debate raged on in Western Canada about whether the agency should retain its so-called single desk. Former wheat board CEO Greg Arason was asked to return in a caretaker role until Measner's replacement was found. I've got no mandate other than to work for the board of the wheat board," White said, sitting at a table in a temporary office with no outside view as renovations are made to the CWB's executive offices, part of a three-year, $12-million building renovation sparked by an asbesto...

Taste Tester Notes: Pastry made with oil is tasty and tender, though not as flaky as traditional pastry. This makes a nice pastry with white or whole wheat flour, with the whole wheat version being heavier. I used canola oil and omitted the sugar. If your dough is not coming together easily, add a few drops of oil to a bit of milk and mix in as needed. For a double crust pie, you can mix up the ingredients for another crust in a bowl, then roll between 2 sheets of waxed paper. Remove top sheet and turn pastry into pan, then remove the remaining sheet and seal and flute the edges. I use a very similar recipe with white flour (and no sugar) for chicken pot pie that has only a top crust, rolling it between 2 sheets of waxed paper. When baking for my own family, I usually use an oil pastry,...
