Substantial research on problem drinking has identified determinants ranging from the biological to the socioculturel. From a social learning theory perspective, drinking represents purposive behaviour (Jessor, 1987). Based on this framework, the psychosocial literature generally indicates two distinct motivational pathways. One of these paths is social, drinking to socialize or avoid social rejection (Celantino & McQueen, 1978; Cox & Klinger, 1988; Read, Wood, Kahler, Maddock, & Palfai, 2003; Smith, Abbey, & Scott, 1993). Although the notion of "social drinking" in common parlance suggests innocuous conviviality, the literature on problem drinking shows the powerful influence of the peer group on high-risk drinking (e.g., Andrews, Tildesley, Hops, & Li, 2002; Wood, ...

This specific mate selection practice, arrangement, is used to designate marriages in these settings: the so-called arranged marriages. Observations about this mate selection practice are then posited as conclusive evidence of change in these marriages. This paper attempts an exploratory clarification of marriages in traditional Africa in two ways. First, it uses the marriage system of the Okrikans to reveal that arranged and non-arranged marriages coexist, each administered by and organized around distinct institutions, with differing consequences for family membership, inheritance and other important issues. Second, it breaks do...

QUESTION: I am a 56-year-old recently widowed woman and I'm finding it very difficult to find someone to travel with because most of my friends are married. I would like to go on two-week holidays to sun spots and extended holidays to Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand in the future. Would you know of a group or company that caters to single women or who match up single travellers?
QUESTION: Travel insurance can be very expensive. A pre-existing condition may not be covered, and once you reach 60, travel insurance can become more difficult and excessively expensive to get. Is travel insurance absolutely necessary when travelling to countries like Mexico or Cuba, or within Canada for that matter, where the cost of medical service may be comparable to our Manitoba medical covera...
