The wood used in engineered products comes from a variety of sources, many of which were previously waste products of the forestry industry. Off-cuts, treetops, and "altered" or diseased wood, such as "beetle kill pine" that while structurally sound would be discarded by the market as unusable, are rescued from the scrap pile. As engineered wood is not limited to structurally acceptable species, by using prolific and faster growing "weed" trees such as aspen, engineered products also help reduce the reliance on (and over harvesting of) only a few select varieties.
