  • She doesn't have anything to go to during the day -- no appointments or anything -- so unless she has somebody come to visit, she doesn't really get up, go do things," said [Laura Phillips], who will graduate from the University of Manitoba this year with a major in zoology before starting her physiotherapy education. "I just think it's a really good idea. It's just nice to go there and see how much they just appreciate having someone there just to talk to. Some of them don't have anybody, so it's kind of nice to have someone to talk to. "We surveyed nurses and other staff about their attitudes towards caring for the elderly and that was one thing that came out was that we don't have time to do those little extra things and families aren't always around to be supportive."

  • Ferguson has just completed one of his most rewarding assignments -- lending his hand-drawn artistry to Disney's new animated version of "Winnie the Pooh" which is slated for release in North America July 15 -- but he knows that the course of his career was probably set when he was still a toddler. After Disney made its controversial decision a few years ago to shut down its hand-drawn animation division, the classically trained Ferguson was willing to make the transition to CGI technology, working on three Disney digital releases -- "Chicken Little," "Meet the Robinsons" and "Bolt.

  • AT a tourism summit recently in Winnipeg, businessman Leo Ledohowski advocated a radical renovation of the city's zoo into an "all bear zoo." It was just the latest in a series of ideas ranging from conversion of the existing zoo to a theme-based "Winnie the Pooh Zoo" or "Northern Animals Zoo," to modification of parts of the zoo to make way for real estate development. Unfortunately, all these ideas fail to acknowledge the value of the Assiniboine Park Zoo in its present form. Further, such notions fail to chart a realistic, or in fact, desirable, course for future development of the zoo. The Assiniboine Park Zoo also contributes meaningfully to research in anthropology and animal behaviour. As recently as last summer, a primatologist from England visited the Assiniboine Park Zoo to co...

  • In many U.S. states, such as Nebraska and Washington, losses range between 78 per cent and 97 per cent. The National Audubon Society has placed the evening grosbeak on its watch list for species in serious trouble. Bird Banding magazine calls the rate of grosbeak decline "spectacular. Taxonomists think there are several evening grosbeak geographic variants. Research by Kendra Sewall and Rodd Kelsey at the University of California suggest each variant might have its own local vocalization dialect. Such variation is most evident in the flight call and it suggests that regional subpopulations, such as those that occur in Manitoba, are largely isolated from one another much of the time. The Manitoba subpopulation is part of the group that is experiencing the sharpest decline. A far more pl...

  • [Robert J. Sawyer]'s novels aren't hard science fiction by most standards; the focus is on how people use science, rather than how major scientific advances act on people. He's skilled at presenting enough real science, in the case of Wake information theory, to raise questions in the minds of readers, without overwhelming those who hope never again to open a book containing an equation. As in his other novels, Sawyer works his own opinions into the fabric. That's an author's prerogative, but the lack of subtlety as he scores his points distracts from the flow. It's refreshing to read a book so deliberately Canadian in a genre dominated by Americans, and it's easy to see why Sawyer now routinely wins not only Canadian science fiction prizes but also international accolades.
