THE Winnipeg Free Press editorial Tension on campus (June 6) claims that: "Every large organization needs a dreamer to grow it bigger and better, and it needs a bean-counter to ensure that the dreams do not become nightmares." Unfortunately, as Thomas Sowell, the American economist, pointed out in his book Inside American Education: The Decline, The Deception, The Dogma, colleges and universities have many more dreamers than bean-counters. Two examples from the University of Manitoba will illustrate this point.
Why pick on the faculty of engineering? Earlier this year, James Blatz, associate head of civil engineering, wrote in the Free Press (Jan. 21) that he had to cancel courses because his department was being "strangled" by the lack of funding. More specifically, he said: "The policy (tuition freeze) now threatens to damage the ability of our schools to provide a skilled workforce that meets the demands of our province's economy."More Bean Counters Needed
