"It's just a big boost for us," said Altona Mayor Melvin Klassen, adding that there would be several business spinoffs from such a facility.

Don Sissons, a past president of the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association, welcomed the processing plant, saying the company was "ahead of the curve" because foods like beans and lentils will soon be touted for their health benefits just as oats were a decade ago.

"I just think it's huge and very exciting and I really applaud the people of those communities who are supporting this business concept," said Sissons, a Portage la Prairie-area farmer. "I think this is going to be a huge thing down the road."
