Aboriginals Part of Solution to Doctor Shortage

Summary

There were 51 aboriginal doctors in Canada back then. That's one aboriginal doctor for every 33,000 aboriginal people. The royal commission recommended training 10,000 aboriginal health professionals within 10 years to better reflect the aboriginal population.

Aboriginal nurses and doctors from Manitoba communities may be less likely to move to other provinces or the U.S. for higher-paying jobs. Many have strong ties to home communities because of extended family connections. Aboriginal health-care workers could provide consistency in remote northern native communities; a place where there are often difficulties filling health-care jobs permanently.

Aboriginal doctors may incorporate holistic aboriginal healing along with western medicine. Aboriginal people receiving treatment -- who statistics show are sicker and more likely to die sooner than the average Canadian -- would benefit, too.
