Summary


"In a sick way it was a form of entertainment for me," [Teerhuis] told jurors as he took the witness stand in his own defence. He said he now reflects on some of his claims - including having sex with the victim after he was dead - and "can't believe it."

The Crown's case rests largely on dozens of letters Teerhuis wrote to Dan Zupansky, a former criminal turned author who befriended Teerhuis after he was arrested. Zupansky was apparently a friend of Teerhuis's cellmate at Headingley Jail, jurors were told.

" I wanted to feed Mr. Zupansky's appetite," said Teerhuis, who wrote the letters while in 23-hour segregation following threats from other inmates. He finally broke off contact with Zupansky after learning a new Manitoba law prevented him from making any profits off his crime. He also feared they could be "damaging" to his case.
