IN Dan Dunne's bedroom the digital alarm clock goes off, that familiar clarion call that tells the middle classes to get up and get productive. Thing is, we get the distinct impression that Dan doesn't need the alarm because he's been awake all night.
Director Ryan Fleck and co-writer Anna Boden offer an intelligent, understated indie version of the drug movie. First of all, Half Nelson is about more than drugs. While drugs are clearly a big thing for Dan -- which explains why he risks smoking crack in the girls' bathroom -- they aren't the only thing. And except for a scene with Dan's awful ex-hippie parents, which offers a standard formula for the roots of addiction, there are no pat judgments or easy answers.See the full content of this document
