Acts of Bravery, Service Recognized at Ceremony

Summary

"It's my job," [Mark Swaffer] said Tuesday, moments after collecting a commendation for bravery from Manitoba's top Mountie, Darrell Madill, at a special ceremony. Cpl. Ron MacDougall also got a commendation for bravery in dealing with an unruly suspect in a July 2004 incident.

With help from a police dog, the brothers were caught and in the process of being arrested one lunged for MacDougall's pistol. The man pointed the gun towards the second officer to fire a shot. No one was hurt. MacDougall was able to drop the magazine out of the gun, rendering it unable to fire again. The brothers were safely taken into custody.

Madill said officers like Swaffer and MacDougall demonstrate what the RCMP have been all about since the then-North West Mounted Police set up shop at Lower Fort Garry more than 100 years ago.
