Players assume the identity of Ethan Thomas, a former Serial Crimes Unit (SCU) investigator who has been called back to duty to track down his missing partner, Malcolm Van Horn. Thomas isn't overjoyed at the notion, since it was his first encounter with Serial Killer X and the growing number of violent people in Metro City that first pushed him to begin drinking heavily.

There are always guns handy, too. But unlike other first-person shooters in which the ammunition is endless, the Condemned series only allows [Thomas] to carry what is in the weapon's magazine. Players' trigger fingers will need to be less itchy. As an extra twist, Thomas' aim is unsteady due to his alcoholism. A few drinks will calm the shakes and clear the view for a time.
