Summary


The musical cross-pollination that brought white and black musicians together in North America didn't just result in new and amazing sounds. In the racially divided 1950s and 1960s, rock 'n' roll amounted to a political statement.

I'm not referring to the cyclical nature of pop-culture trends, which is more important to the fashion world than it is to music, anyway. I'm referring to the rise of nostalgia, which has supplanted creativity and spontaneity as the defining aspect of rock 'n' roll.

The list of the highest-grossing touring acts of 2009 may as well be entries from a rock 'n' roll history textbook, given the presence of Elton John, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen and Iron Maiden. The appetite for something new simply cannot match the seemingly insatiable need for rock 'n' roll audiences to consume something familiar and safe instead.
