SkyPower set to build solar park in Thunder Bay

The Toronto-based SkyPower Limited is preparing to begin construction work on a new 8.5-megawatt solar park project on Thunder Bay International Airport lands in early 2011.

The project will create 100 direct clean energy jobs during peak construction, and many more indirect jobs through the region. It will reach commercial operation by summer 2011.

Financing for the project was recently closed with Deutsche Bank, while an engineering, procurement and construction agreement to build the solar park was executed with Canadian Solar Inc.

The Thunder Bay Airport Solar Park is slated to produce enough clean energy to meet the needs of roughly 1,000 homes after its first year of operation, and 15,000 homes over 20 years. It will offset roughly 7,500 tonnes of carbon per year.

"This is another important clean energy and job creation milestone for Ontario in the Thunder Bay region," said Kerry Adler, president and CEO of SkyPower Limited, in a release.

"I would like to thank the Thunder Bay International Airport Authority, our business partners and most importantly the region of Thunder Bay for their open arms, foresight and economic innovation. This project is a testament to the great things that can be accomplished for the environment and future generations when we work together."
