Summary
Some cats may have other health issues that affect periodontal disease. Cats with feline leukemia or feline immunodeficiency viral infections, with reduced immunity, will have an associated greater degree of periodontal disease. Cats with herpes virus or calici virus may have additional periodontal involvement. Viral testing for these diseases is recommended. A full blood chemistry analysis gives us important information about inner organ function, which may be associated with periodontal disease. Full mouth radiographs are important in assessing the bone support and roots of the teeth.
