The sounds of success, or opportunities for growth, have also been apparent in other industries across Atlantic Canada, once considered the poor cousin of Western and Central regions and their leading economies. Today, there are several sectors, including mining/oil and gas development, business administration, telecommunications and wood products, which have outperformed the national rate in terms of growth in real GDP per person. Behind much of that growth stand employees often led by chartered accountants, who bring a wealth of expertise to the table. Even when they're not leading, CAs are becoming an even more important addition to a team that must make sense of a business that's increasingly tied to a science or technology, whether the goal is to expand the business in subsea construction, promote the development of hydrocarbon resources or provide broadband and wireless services.

It's not unusual to be interrupted by a loud ringing in the offices of Secunda Marine Services Ltd. in the middle of the workday. It's not a nearby bell tower, church or school bell echoing in the building but the clanging of a large brass bell just outside the office and it's become a traditional way of alerting employees that there's good news about the business. These days, it's been ringing often at the Dartmouth, NS, company, which runs a diversified fleet of marine vessels that supports the booming offshore oil and gas industry as well as subsea cable-laying and maintenance businesses.
