Backing Out On Olywest Bad Idea, Council Told

Summary


In November, council approved a land and tax-incentive deal to help OlyWest, a consortium of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec hog producers, build a $200-million processing and rendering plant in the St. Boniface Industrial Park. The project still faces environmental approval from the province.

"Council made a decision that was legal and binding," said [Lazarenko], who actually voted against the OlyWest deal in November but calls the rescindment vote a "no-substance motion" that only serves to scare off future investment from the city.

"If we were to renege on this and rescind, we'd be sending a very critical message to the business community and putting the city at risk," said Lazarenko.
