Beijing to Show Today's China

Summary

"Increased cultural understanding is an important part of the Games," says Sun Weide, deputy director of media and communications for Beijing 2008. "We'll be able to showcase our culture and history, and show the world today's China."

"Beijing is trying to improve infrastructure for transportation," says Weide. Four new subways lines will be added, increasing the subway's total length from 114 to 199 kilometres. Lanes will be built for public transportation only, and the capital airport will add a new terminal and a third runway, increasing its capacity from 40 to 60 million passengers.

"To be frank," says Weide, "we're not just concerned about the time during the Games; it's only 16 days. We want it to be safer for everyone in the long term."
