Believable Kids Make a Stay at Isolated Ontario Motel Worthwhile

Summary

During the course of a single afternoon, [Daniel] makes a tentative connection with an older woman. Vera (Elena Hudgins Lyle) is 13 and also an only child. She and her dad are left stranded at the motel by Vera's emotionally unstable mother (played by co-director/co-writer Ingrid Veninger), who storms from the motel in the latest in apparently a long series of tantrums.

If co-filmmakers Veninger and Simon Reynolds indulge too heavily in scenes and shots that meander maddeningly, they at least manage to offer up interesting and even recognizable juvenile protagonists -- never an easy feat. The naturalistic performances of [Jacob Switzer] (Veninger's son) and Lyle emerge as the best reasons to buck up and abide your way through the occasional tedious bits.
