IT isn't necessarily part of Jean Charest's go-it-alone Kyoto plan, but Quebec's looming ban on smoking in public places is bound to have some positive impact on clean air, even if it doesn't do much to reduce global warming.

At midnight on May 31, Quebec finally joins the other nine provinces in banning smoking in virtually all public places, including restaurants and bars. It's been a long time in coming, and even though certain groups are fuming -- pardon the pun -- the Charest government felt the time was right for Quebecers to go cold turkey in the province's eateries and watering holes.

There will be many who bemoan the passing of Quebec's great age of tobacco, smokers from more strict anti-tobacco jurisdictions, for example, who relished a trip to relaxed Quebec bars.
