Blue Heroes of the Past

Summary

In the days before they were dubbed the 'Blue Bombers' they were just the Winnipegs, and one of their first heroes was Fritz Hanson. One of the first imports to play professionally in Canada, Hanson would score on a 78-yard punt return and finish with over 300 yards in the franchise's first championship.

Chester McCance took some of his first steps toward a spot in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame with his work in the Bombers' playoff run. The team's regular kicker, Greg Kabat, was injured and so was [Art Stevenson] -- Kabat's replacement -- and Bill Nairn, Stevenson's replacement. In steps McCance, who had never kicked a field goal before 1940, but hit two in the West Final and two more against the Riders.

Jim Van Pelt, replacing an injured Ken Ploen, would set an individual Grey Cup scoring record with 22 points on two touchdowns -- one on a halfback-pass-option from Leo Lewis, the other following a long run by Ploen, who had still dressed for the game and played -- as well as two field goals and four converts. (Van Pelt's record would stand for 19 years until Montreal Alouette kicker Don Sweet finished with 23 points in the 1977 Grey Cup).
