Manitoba's Building Boom Withstands Recession's Ill Winds

Summary

"It's been five or six really strong years for Manitoba's construction industry," WCA executive vice-president Ron Hambley said. "2007 was a banner year and as we went into 2008, we said if we could match those numbers we'd be doing very well. So to beat them by more than 10 per cent -- it was a phenomenal year."

Hambley said this year is also shaping up to be another busy one for Manitoba construction companies despite the deepening North American recession. He said officials were worried construction would start to slow in the final quarter of 2008, "but that never happened and it hasn't happened yet. So the industry is very optimistic."

Winnipeg's yearly gain was even bigger than Manitoba's, with an increase of 14.7 per cent to $1.03 billion for 2008.
