Summary
There is no fault to be found in Mr. [Dion] for this decision. The idea of the opposition giving carte blanche to a minority government to govern as it pleases for a year or so, as Mr. [Harper] requested, is indeed "a joke". He did, however, demonstrate his usual impeccable political timing by announcing it on the same day as a Strategic Counsel poll showed the Tories within striking range of a majority government -- 37 per cent support compared to the Liberals' 29; and, the cherry on top, 53 per cent of voters believing Mr. Harper would make the best prime minister, compared to only 17 per cent for Mr. Dion. A Nanos Poll last week had the Liberal leader trailing the NDP's Jack Layton on the issue of who would make the best PM.
