The opening lead is the jack of spades. Plan the play. When the deal occurred in a Swiss team-of-four match declarer at the first table played immediately on the diamonds. As it happened, both diamond finesses failed, whereupon he had to lose five tricks, two in diamonds and three in spades.
Had the jack of clubs lost to the king, declarer would win the spade continuation, play the ace of clubs (unblocking the nine) and try the hearts, ending by winning the third round in dummy. If he was again unlucky and the jack did not fall, he would still have the last resort of a finesse for the 10 of clubs, making the contract whenever East had begun play with that card.Bridge
