It was clear to East that the defenders needed two diamond tricks to defeat the contract, so he switched to the king of that suit. The defenders thereupon took their top diamonds and, of course, East subsequently captured the setting trick with the ace of clubs.

Declarer would then win trick two with the jack, draw trumps and deposit one of his losing diamonds on dummy's ace of spades, making the contract.
