[Wayne Blackmore] said this year anyone caught not wearing a seatbelt will get a ticket. The fine for not wearing a seatbelt in Manitoba is $230 for drivers and passengers. Unbelted drivers will also receive two demerits on their driver's licence.

"The bottom line is that we're not going to cut any slack," Blackmore said. "They days of warnings are over. You get a ticket."

According to Transport Canada's 2006 survey of seatbelt use in rural Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and two of the three territories were below the 88.3 per cent national average for seatbelt use. (Manitoba's compliance rate is 86.4 per cent).
