Budget No Stinker, but Could Have Been Much Better

Summary


On budget day, those with an axe to grind (whether righteous or not) have a better-than-usual chance of getting their voices heard, as God knows there's no shortage of us frenzied media types running about the Legislature, hunting for the perfect sound bite -- a clever one is nice, but a nasty one will work just fine -- to bolster whatever particular slant we've decided to apply to our budget coverage.

True, the province's three-year, $188 million affordable housing strategy got a $16.6 million boost (here's hoping it will be spent on building a few more social housing units), and $3.5 million was allocated towards extending the Manitoba Shelter Benefit so that more people can get help with their rent, with more details promised in the near future.

I should hope so. I just wonder what "more" means, and how, in the absence of a clearly articulated strategy with measurable goals, we'll even know if the "more" that we're doing is working.
