"It's a wonderful recognition and endorsement of a lot of the things that I've been doing," [Charles Taylor], a lifelong Roman Catholic, said in an interview.

"Someone comes along and says 'You can have fantastic meaning to your life, you can join this great jihad,' " Taylor said. "If (we in the West) think that they're just mad at us or they want a land grab... you get the kinds of totally counterproductive policies which are making their lives even worse and even more meaningless."

As for the notion that religion is to blame for much of the world's violence, he said "it's not a prerogative of religion." Atheistic beliefs, such as Stalinism, have been similarly violent.
